The latest teaser confirms a new user-friendly shift-on-the-fly 4WD system. This replaces the previous, potentially not-so-convenient lever. The new system is conveniently located on the driver's side, opposite the front power window buttons, flanking the 5-speed manual gear lever. The familiar differential lock controls remain positioned slightly forward of the gear shifter for easy access.

The new Gurkha's digital instrument cluster hints at a significant upgrade in features and safety. It showcases a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that even tracks the spare tire on the back - a feature typically found only in luxury SUVs like the Land Rover Defender. Beyond the existing dual airbags, speed-sensing door locks, and rear parking sensors, the Gurkha gets a boost in capability with the addition of traction control and hill assist, making it even more adept at tackling tough terrain.

Sharing its DNA with the 3-door Gurkha, the upcoming 5-door variant is likely to pack the same 2.6-liter diesel engine. While official power figures are yet to be revealed, the 3-door Gurkha's engine churns out 91hp and 250Nm of torque. Whispers suggest the 5-door might get a tweaked engine for potentially more muscle power.

Price Bump Expected

The Gurkha launch is anticipated in the coming weeks, and a slight price increase is on the horizon. The 3-door when it was lat active, sat at Rs. 15.10 lakh, but expect a bump in the price tag. With the added practicality of five doors, the 5-door Gurkha is estimated to cost Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 1.5 lakh more compared to its 3-door counterpart.

Verdict

The Force Gurkha continues to build its hype and is doing a good job at it. Prospective buyers are holding off their purchases until it hits the showrooms to assess their options and then take their off-roader home. However, if it wants to seriously impact the Mahindra Thar sales number, the pricing and the final product needs to match its level of experience that it provides.
