Yamaha Y-AMT Gearbox: How It Works?
The Y-AMT stands for Yamaha Automated Manual Transmission and it is based on the Jin-Ki Kanno philosophy. This rider-machine unity principle has resulted in this new AMT gearbox that works without a foot-selector for gears. While it is not the first time that an AMT gearbox is coming on a two-wheeler, KTM & BMW have done it already, this new gearbox will be the fastest of them all. As per Yamaha, it is even quicker than a quickshifter and it is going to revolutionize the automatic gearboxes in the segment.
Similar to the other automatic transmissions, it has manual and auto modes. However, the rivals use a gear selector via foot for changing gears in the manual mode. Yamaha, meanwhile, has replaced this via the '+' and '-' actuators present on the handlebar. Hence, the rider can change the gears quickly via hands and focus more on riding. Further, the auto mode has two options, a D, and a D+. The D mode makes the gearshifts smoother and efficient while the D+ mode holds the gears longer for quick performance.
Currently, Yamaha has not disclosed which of its models is going to receive this technology first. However, few rumours online hint that the new-gen MT-07 will be the debut bike with this gearbox. Moreover, the upcoming MT-09 is also anticipated to benefit from this technology.

Verdict
The idea of AMTs in motorcycles doesn't sound very enthusiastic. But, a good automatic gearbox & right tuning can really help the rider, as we've seen previously on the Honda Africa Twin. The AMT wouldn't be just for comfort, but, it will be for quicker performance with ease for the riders.
