Going by the reports, Yamaha is planning to introduce a pair of mid-weight sports bikes in India by April 2023. Although the timeline looks short and there is already a lot to figure out; Yamaha is planning to do so before the OBD2 ports are mandated in India. As the R7 & MT-07 are not mandated for the OBD2, the launch may get pushed to 2024 if Yamaha doesn't hurry up. On the other hand, the European market is also waiting for the OBD2 ports to mandate; which is slated to happen by 2024. It is being reported that both of the models will come as CBU in India.
Speaking of the R7, it is a successor to the iconic middle-weight sports bike i.e. Yamaha R6. Unlike the R6, the R7 is not an inline-four-cylinder. It is based on a new 689cc cross-plane crank, an inline-twin engine. This engine produces peak power of 73.4 hp & 67 Nm of peak torque. A 6-speed constant mesh gearbox with a slipper-assist clutch is used to deliver the power. A new diamond frame, fully-adjustable USD forks, dual-front disc brakes, and 17-inch wheels are used for the R7. The R7 weighs 188 kg wet, thus, making it a feather-light bike in the segment. The Yamaha R15 V4 gets its design cues from the upcoming R7.

In India, the Yamaha MT-15 gets its design cues from the MT-07. The upright seating posture is a more comfort-fit for city riding. The MT series bikes are known for their handling characteristics. Specification-wise, the MT-07 is very different from the R7. It uses telescopic forks up front, it weighs 184 kg wet, & the seat height is 805 mm for easy access to the rider.
