Currently, Mahindra has closed the bookings for the base variant AX of the 2020 Thar. This step came soon after they announced that they have already received more than 20,000 bookings and have a waiting period of over 180 days for the new Thar.

This AX variant is the or let's say was the most affordable variant in the Thar line-up. The 6-seater version came with both petrol and diesel engine. The prices for this started from Rs 9.80 lakh and fetched till Rs 10.85 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi.
Since this is the base variant, features like touchscreen infotainment unit, steering mounted controls, front-facing seats, hardtop, coloured MID, cruise control and other comfort and convenience items are not present for this one. This one also gets a fixed soft top unit unlike the convertible and hardtop present in higher variants. This variant gets 16-inchers and comes with 245/75 dimension. Yes, they are steel wheels.

Powering this AX variant of Mahindra Thar is the 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel and a new 2.0-litre mStallion petrol engine. The latter generates 150 PS with 320 Nm of peak torque and the diesel continues with 130 PS and 300 Nm of torque.
Yes, with advanced technology and to push the petrol models, the torque figure is higher in this one. However, if you are someone who is a mile cruncher and wants a good fuel economy, we suggest you go for the oil burner. Both the engines get mated to a 6-speed manual and a 6-sped torque converter unit.
