2020 Hyundai i20 Pros and Cons

Pros

Stylish Looks

The all-new 2020 Hyundai i20 is a looker! It looks really very striking and will definitely turn a lot of heads out on the streets. At the front, the new-gen i20 gets Hyundai's signature cascading grille with parametric jewel pattern finish. The grille is flanked by LED projector headlights and it also gets LED DRLs and cornering fog lamps. The premium hatch gets a lot of cuts and creases on the body panels and sporty front and rear bumpers. The side profile of the car houses aerodynamic ORVMs, 16-inch diamond-cut dual-tone alloy wheels and at the rear, it gets Z-shaped LED taillights.

Spacious Cabin

The new third-gen Hyundai i20 is longer and wider than its predecessor. It also gets a bigger boot than the second-gen i20 and sits on a slightly longer wheelbase. All these things make the new i20 a very spacious car. It gets a very spacious cabin, all thanks to its 2580 mm wheelbase. The seats are also pretty comfortable and even six-feet tall passengers can seat comfortably without any hassle. The new i20 measures 3995 mm in length, 1775 mm in width, 1505 mm in height. It has a ground clearance of 170 mm and gets a massive 300-litre boot space.

Bucket Loads of Features

The new-gen Hyundai i20 is loaded with features up to the gills. It gets a ton of features, including some segment-first ones. Talking about the feature highlights, it gets a big 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. It even gets Hyundai's BlueLink tech with over 50 connected car features. The new i20 also gets premium Bose speakers, an electric sunroof, smart OxyBoost air purifier with AQI indicator, push-button start/stop button, wireless charger, an all-digital instrument cluster, ambient lighting, cruise control and many more. It gets a host of active and passive safety features too which include up to six airbags, reverse parking sensors with a rear parking camera, ABS with EBD, ESC, hill-start assist, TPMS, cruise control, etc.

Several Engine and Transmission Options

The new Hyundai i20 gets three BS6-compliant engines and there are five different transmissions on offer. It gets a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine that churns out 83 PS of power (88 PS of power with IVT) and 115 Nm of peak torque. It comes mated a 5-speed manual gearbox and an IVT (CVT). Then, we have a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine that pumps out 120 PS of power and 171 Nm of torque. The turbo petrol motor comes mated to a 7-speed DCT (dual-clutch transmission) and a 6-speed iMT (intelligent manual transmission). Finally, it gets a 1.5-litre diesel engine that churns out 100 PS of power and 240 Nm of peak torque. It comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox only.

Good Fuel-efficiency

The powertrain options of the new Hyundai i20 are really good. They offer a good driving experience and deliver very good fuel economy too. The new Hyundai i20 is also the most fuel-efficient diesel hatchback in the country. In fact, we put it to the test and we managed to get over 30 kmpl from this brand new diesel i20. You can watch the real-world mileage test of the car by clicking HERE. The engine and transmission option-wise ARAI-claimed fuel-efficiency figures of the new i20 are mentioned in the table below:

Engine and GearboxARAI-claimed Fuel Economy
1.2L Petrol with MT21 kmpl
1.2L Petrol with IVT19.65 kmpl
1.0L Petrol with iMT20 kmpl
1.0L Petrol with DCT20.28 kmpl
1.5L Diesel with MT25 kmpl

Cons

No Diesel Automatic Combo

Now, coming to the negatives, so the first con of the new Hyundai i20 is that it doesn't get a diesel-automatic combination. The 1.5-litre diesel engine of the new i20 is a great powertrain option. It churns out 100 PS of power and 240 Nm of peak torque. The oil-burner is very powerful, is nice to drive and delivers very good fuel economy too. However, it doesn't offer the choice and convenience of an automatic. It gets a 6-speed manual gearbox only and the addition of automatic transmission would have been really nice.

Turbo Petrol Engine Not Available with 'Pure' Manual Gearbox

Its next con is that the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine of the new i20 doesn't get a 'pure' manual gearbox. The 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine of the i20 churns out 120 PS of power and 172 Nm of peak torque. However, it comes mated to a 7-speed DCT (dual-clutch transmission) and a 6-speed iMT (intelligent manual transmission) only. While the DCT is good and the iMT is a revolutionary technology, Hyundai should have offered a proper manual gearbox with the turbo petrol engine as that would have been even better.

Some Missing Features

Our next con isn't really a negative point but we are just nit-picking things. The new i20 is a very feature-loaded car. However, it does miss out on some features like ventilated seats and an auto-dimming IRVM. The old Elite i20 used to get an auto-dimming inside rear-view mirror (IRVM) and the same would have been added here too. Also, the ventilated seats would have been a welcome addition in the top-spec variants of the car as its top-spec trims are quite pricey compared to its rivals. More about the price in the next section.

Price

Finally, talking about the price, the new 2020 Hyundai i20 is available in four variants - Magna, Sportz, Asta and Asta (O). The price of the new third-generation model of this premium hatch starts at Rs. 6.79 lakhs and it goes all the way up to Rs. 11.18 lakhs. All prices stick to Ex-showroom Delhi. The top-spec variants of the new i20 feel a bit overpriced and Hyundai should have priced it a bit more competitively. Also, to bring the price of the base variant even more down, Hyundai will soon launch a new affordable base variant of the car - Hyundai i20 Era. To know more about it, click HERE.
