Tata Motors launched its highly anticipated premium hatchback, Tata Altroz, in January this year. The Altroz is the company's first offering in the premium hatch segment of the country. It boasts of striking looks, feature-loaded cabin with several segment-first features, decent powertrains and attractive pricing. It was launched with an aim to set gold standard benchmarks in its category. However, it couldn't live up to everyone's expectations. That's because its petrol engine was good and not great. But, things are going to change now as Tata Motors will soon launch a new turbocharged petrol engine with the Altroz. The upcoming 2020 Tata Altroz Turbo Petrol has been recently spied on test in India which hints its imminent launch.
Recently, a heavily camouflaged test mule of Tata Altroz was spied on test in India. The test mule was bearing TN 37 registration number plate and was spotted at Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. If you recall, Coimbatore is the home-town of Jayem Automotives. The joint venture between Tata Motors and Jayem Automotives, collectively known as Jayem Tata Special Vehicles (JTSV) gave us the Tiago and the Tigor JTP. Not long ago, this joint venture parted their ways but it seems that Tata will continue making performance cars for the Indian car enthusiasts.
Currently, Tata Altroz gets a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged Revotorq diesel engine. This oil-burner churns out 90 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque. It comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. It also gets a 1.2-litre, naturally-aspirated, three-cylinder Revotron petrol engine. This petrol motor churns out 86 PS of power and 113 Nm of torque. This engine also comes coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission only. Tata Motors didn't offer an automatic transmission at the time of launch. Moreover, the underwhelming performance of the three-cylinder petrol engine was a blunder.

Tata will address this con of the excellent premium hatchback by launching a turbocharged petrol engine. The Altroz Turb will be powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine. This turbo motor is expected to churn out at least 100 PS of power and around 141 Nm of torque. Also, according to reports, the Altroz Turbo will come mated to a 5-speed manual and a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Tatas new DCT gearbox will offer better fuel-efficiency and will be more refined and smooth-shifting than the existing AMT gearboxes. The company will use a Punch-sourced 7-speed DT-1 dual-clutch gearbox that has been designed especially for the compact cars (offering torque up to 200Nm).
Aesthetically, the Altroz Turbo will be completely identical to the regular Altroz. Even features and equipment on offer will be completely similar. It will get a free-standing 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto, Apple Car Play, Navigation, voice command recognition and many more features. The Altroz is based on Tata's new ALFA architecture. It gets plenty of safety features which include ABS with EBD, dual front airbags, ISOFIX child seat mounts, rear parking sensors & camera and more. Moreover, the Altroz has bagged 5-Star Safety Rating in the Global NCAP Crash Test.
The upcoming 2020 Tata Altroz Turbo Petrol model is expected to go on sale in India by the festive season of 2020. Currently, the Altroz is sold in five variants: XE, XM, XT, XZ and XZ (O) and is priced between Rs. 5.29 lakhs - Rs. 9.29 lakhs, Ex-showroom Delhi. We expect the turbo petrol model to be priced a bit premium compared to the current model. Moreover, it is offered in five different colour shades: High Street Gold, Downtown Red, Skyline Silver, Midtown Grey and Avenue White.
