Mahindra is in its final phase of testing the upcoming 5-door Thar. The latest spotting of a production-ready test car reveals some major changes up close. Mahindra Thar 5-Door: Exterior Changes
As visible in the spy shots, it'll be a longer version of the current 3-Door Thar. It'll get a new dual-tone set of 19-inch alloy wheels with 255/60 tyres. Also, the length will be longer due to the second-row addition. Moreover, it'll be equipped with LED headlights and LED fog lights.
Other minute changes will include slight revisions to the bumper design. Mahindra will also embed new badges all around it. However, the overall silhouette of the 5-Door Thar is similar to the 3-Door version.
Mahindra Thar 5-Door Major Interior Upgrades
With no tax benefit to claim, Mahindra aims to offer luxury with the 5-Door Thar. The cabin will get a new dashboard with a bigger touchscreen for infotainment. Also visible in the spy photos are the new digital instrument console and the Scorpio N-derived steering wheel.
Other details include the single bench rear seat with an armrest for rear passengers. Mahindra will sell the 5-Door Thar with optional captain seats as well. Features will include an auto IRVM, push button start/stop, different drive modes and traction modes, electric sunroof, etc.
Engine, Transmission, Price, and Launch Date
Mahindra will continue offering the same engine options on the 5-door Thar as offered on the current 3-door. A 2.2-lt turbo-diesel and a 2-lt turbo-petrol engine options will be available with options of a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
The pricing of Thar 5-Door is unknown, but we suspect it to be around Rs 15 lakh to Rs 20 lakh (introductory). The expected timeline of its debut is before the Q3 festive season of this year. Mahindra can also name it 'Thar Armada', a name that has already been trademarked.
Verdict
Thar 5-Door is expected to be an ice-breaker for Mahindra in premium vehicle category. With no competition offering a 4X4 with a 5-seat layout, the 5-Door Thar will be a unique product. Moreover, the options of petrol and diesel engines will help in its diversified sales pan India.
