Gone are the days when naturally aspirated petrol engines lead the affordable cars segment and turbo-charged units were reserved for expensive and performance-oriented vehicles. After the BS6 norms came into play, mass-market manufacturers blasted the hatchback, compact sedans and sub-compact SUV segment with turbo petrol engine options. These small-capacity turbo motors are powerful yet fuel-efficient and help car manufacturers get some tax benefits, thereby making the product more affordable. So today we have compiled a comprehensive list of affordable turbo petrol cars under Rs. 10 lakh in India, along with all the necessary details.

Tata Nexon- From Rs. 7.70 Lakh

Affordable Turbo Petrol Cars

The most affordable turbo petrol car in India is the Tata Nexon. At a starting price of Rs. 7.70 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base XE trim, the sub-compact SUV is powered by a 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine. The power output of the four-wheeler is rated at 120 bhp and 170 Nm of peak torque. The setup is mated to the option of a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed AMT gearbox. Apart from being the most affordable option, it is also the most powerful vehicle on the list.

Nissan Magnite Turbo - From Rs. 8.01 Lakh

The range of Nissan Magnite Turbo starts from Rs. 8.01 lakh and goes well above the Rs. 10 lakh mark for the top-spec trim. Powering the four-wheeler is a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine, putting out 100 bhp and 160 Nm of peak torque. It comes mated to the option of a 5-speed manual and a CVT gearbox.

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Turbo: For Rs. 8.02 Lakh

Powered by a 1.0-litre tGDi petrol engine, the Grand i10 Nios is capable of churning out 100 bhp and 172 Nm of peak torque. Hyundai only offers the turbo petrol engine in a single Sportz trim which comes at a sticker price of Rs. 8.02 lakh (ex-showroom). The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Citroen C3: For Rs. 8.15 Lakh

Taking the 4th spot in the list of most affordable turbo petrol cars, the Citroen C3 is powered by a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder PureTech turbo petrol engine, putting out 110 bhp and 190 Nm of peak torque. The C3 Turbo is only offered in the top rung trim which is priced at Rs. 8.15 lakh (ex-showroom).

Tata Altroz i-Turbo: From Rs. 8.25 Lakh

The range of Tata Altroz i-Turbo starts from Rs. 8.25 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes all the way up to Rs. 9.25 lakh (ex-showroom). It is available in three variants, i.e. XT, XZ, and XZ+. Under the hood, the premium hatchback uses a 1.2-litre Turbo Petrol engine which is good enough for 110 bhp and 140 Nm of peak torque. Power is channeled to the front wheels using a 5-speed manual transmission.

Mahindra XUV300: From Rs. 8.41 Lakh

At a sticker price of Rs. 8.41 lakh (ex-showroom), the base W4 trim of Mahindra XUV300 is the starting point of the vehicle's turbo petrol range. Using the 1.2 litre 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine, the mid-size SUV's power output stands at 109 bhp and 300 Nm of peak torque. It comes mated to a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed AMT transmission.

Hyundai Aura: For Rs. 8.87 lakh

The second Hyundai model joining the list of affordable turbo petrol cars is the Aura. Using an identical powertrain setup as its hatchback sibling, the sedan produces 100 bhp and 172 Nm of peak torque, putting the 1.0-litre tGDi petrol engine to work. Much like the Grand i10 Nios, the Korean carmaker offers this potent engine only in the top-spec SX+ variant, which will set you back by Rs. 8.87 lakh (ex-showroom).

Hyundai i20: From Rs. 8.88 Lakh

The Hyundai i20 Turbo uses the familiar 1.0-litre tGDi petrol engine putting out 120 bhp and 172 Nm of peak torque. The transmission choices on offer include a 6-speed iMT and a 7-speed DCT unit. The premium hatchback's turbo petrol range starts from Rs. 8.88 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes all the way up to Rs. 11.63 lakh (ex-showroom). You can buy both transmission options depending upon your requirements within the Rs. 10 lakh price bracket.

Renault Kiger: From Rs. 8.92 Lakh

The Renault Kiger Turbo Petrol range starts from Rs. 8.92 lakh (ex-showroom). The sub-compact SUV uses a familiar 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine, putting out 100 bhp and 160 Nm of peak torque. It comes mated to the option of a 5-speed manual and a CVT gearbox. The top-spec RXZ Turbo CVT trim of Kiger has been priced a notch above the Rs. 10 lakh mark, i.e. Rs. 10.39 lakh (ex-showroom).

Kia Sonet: From Rs. 9.99 Lakh

The only variant of Kia Sonet Turbo Petrol that sits within the Rs. 10 lakh price bracket is the HTK+ iMT. The power unit is a familiar 1.0-litre tGDi petrol engine putting out 120 bhp and 172 Nm of peak torque. The transmission choices on offer include a 6-speed iMT and a 7-speed DCT unit. If you want a full-fledged automatic transmission, you will have to spend a minimum of Rs. 11.55 lakh (ex-showroom) for the 1.0 Turbo Petrol HTX 7 DCT variant.

Hyundai Venue: From Rs. 10 Lakh

The Hyundai Venue managed to get itself registered on the affordable turbo petrol cars list with the 1.0-litre turbo petrol S(O) iMT trim costing Rs. 10 lakh (ex-showroom). The sub-compact SUV uses a similar powertrain setup as the Kia Sonet and its hatchback sibling i20, which is the 1.0-litre tGDi petrol engine putting out 120 bhp and 172 Nm of peak torque. The transmission choices are also identical, which include a 6-speed iMT and a 7-speed DCT unit. The proper automatic S(O) DCT trim of Venue Turbo Petrol will set you back by Rs. 10.97 lakh (ex-showroom).

Verdict: Packing more punch in a smaller package, these turbo petrol engines are leading the way in the affordable car segment. Mild at city speeds, these power units are often a hoot to drive out on long-stretching highways. Despite the turbo lag, which is the fundamental nature of these engines, they are effortless pullers when you put the pedal down, at the same time delivering respectable fuel efficiency figures. The story doesn't end here, with the smaller cubic capacity, comes the highs of tax benefits that are enjoyed by car manufacturers, which in return is transferred to customers by means of the lower sticker price.
