Earlier this year, at the Auto Expo Motor Show, BYD unveiled its third electric vehicle model designed for the Indian market, known as the BYD Seal. Although an exact launch date hasn't been confirmed, it is expected to become available in India around mid-2024. The BYD Seal is already being sold in various international markets and has recently undergone EURO NCAP crash testing, achieving a 5-star rating in the safety evaluation.

BYD Seal - EURO NCAP Crash Test
The BYD Seal marks the third electric vehicle from the Chinese EV manufacturer ready to enter the Indian market. The official webpage for the Seal model is already active on BYD India's website. Notably, in a recent crash test, the EV achieved a perfect 5-star safety rating for both adult and child occupant safety.
The EURO NCAP crash test evaluation is structured around four key aspects: adult occupant safety, child occupant safety, protection for vulnerable road users, and safety assistance features. In the adult occupant front impact test, the Seal sedan achieved a commendable 13.5 out of 16 points, earning a 'good' rating. It attained a perfect 16 out of 16 points in the lateral impact test, and in the rear impact assessment, it scored 3.7 out of 4 points. Furthermore, in the rescue and extrication test, the Seal secured 2.5 out of 4 points.
The Seal EV achieved an impressive 86% rating for child occupant safety and 89% for adult occupant safety. In terms of protecting vulnerable road users, it received a solid score of 82%, while the safety assist rating reached 76%.

BYD Seal EV Specifications
The BYD Seal utilizes the e-platform 3.0 architecture, which accommodates BYD's proprietary Blade battery system. In international markets, the BYD Seal is available with two battery pack choices. The first option is a 61.4kWh battery pack, providing an impressive 550km of driving range. The second option boasts an 82.5kWh battery, claiming an even more impressive 700km range on a single charge. Furthermore, the larger battery pack generates a peak power of 530bhp and a peak torque of 730 Nm, allowing the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in just 3.8 seconds.
Verdict
BYD has been well-received by Indian consumers, with the BYD E6 MPV being a popular choice among fleet operators and the Atto 3 gaining favor among premium EV buyers. The upcoming Seal Sedan is set to be a premium offering in the Indian market, positioning itself in competition with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the KIA EV6. Anticipated to be priced between Rs 55-60 lakh (ex-showroom), it aims to cater to the high-end segment of buyers.
