2020 Hyundai Creta Diesel More In Demand; What Makes It So Popular?

Hyundai Creta has always been the best seller in its segment ever since it was launched in the Indian market. Last year its cousin, Kia Seltos grabbed this position and Creta was affected very much in terms of sales. This year was different as Hyundai introduced the all-new 2020 Creta with new engines - two petrol and one diesel. And the mid-size SUV has been heavily upgraded in terms of looks and features after all.

The 2020 Hyundai Creta starts at Rs 9.99 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi for both petrol and diesel models. And a recent report has confirmed that the demand for diesel is more than petrol counterparts. With country switching to cleaner BS6 norms, the oil burner is shifting towards the more expensive side but still, the demand for diesel is more with the 2020 Creta.

How is that possible? Why is it people are looking for a diesel option in Creta when petrol is cheaper? We explain this theory!

Base Variant Priced same as the Petrol
This can be one of the main factors for diesel bookings more than petrol. The base trims of 2020 Creta starts at Rs 9.99 lakh and offers a significant amount of features.

More torque
Hyundai sources all of the three engines from the Seltos and the power delivery of all are the same. Sharing details on the 1.5L diesel then it churns out 113 bhp with a peak torque of 250 Nm. The power delivery is the same as the 1.5L petrol but the torque is more in the oil burner.

More Fuel Efficient
People inclined towards diesel also look out for fuel efficiency when buying an SUV. And Hyundai offers an excellent mileage on the diesel, be it for the automatic or manual or automatic transmission. The diesel mill on the Creta delivers 21.4 km/l for the manual and 18.5 km/l for the 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Now, coming to an interview, Tarun Garg Director - Sales, Marketing and Service, Hyundai (India), said, 55% of the total bookings of the new-gen Creta are of diesel. And the remaining 45% is for petrol trims. Here's a twist too, since there are two petrol engines, only 12% have chosen the turbo-petrol trim, the 1.4L one.

One reason for the less number of bookings of the turbo petrol trim could be the higher price. It starts from Rs 16.16 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi. It makes that a pretty expensive affair. It comes with a standard 7-speed DCT gearbox along with paddle shifters. Hyundai might look at introducing the turbo-petrol in lower trims in the coming months to attract a wider audience base.
