It is just a matter of 11 days before the new BS6 emission norms strike in the automobile market and all BS4 models which cannot be upgraded have to die. One such car is the Hyundai Elite i20 which has been discontinued by the carmaker in its diesel avatar.
Yes, the 1.4-litre diesel engine of Hyundai Elite i20 has faced the axe from the manufacturer and the same has been removed from the website too. This comes out just days before the new emission norms kick in from April 1, 2020.
This 1.4-litre oil burner churned out 90 bhp with a peak torque of 220 Nm and was known to be one of the smoothest engines. The unit was mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Currently, the i20 is sold in a sole 1.2-litre petrol engine only and it comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The CVT is discontinued too. This engine churns 83 PS of power with 113 Nm of torque. The car competes with the likes of Honda Jazz, Volkswagen Polo, Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Toyota Glanza.
The oil burner will surely come into existence but only with the newer iteration of the model. It will sport a new BS6 compliant diesel engine of a 1.5-litre capacity and can well churn about 100 bhp on tap. The torque figures will be increased too. And we can also expect an automatic gearbox for a wider audience.
Also, a new turbo petrol engine will also come into the picture. The 1.0-litre turbo motor is expected to churn as much as 120 bhp on tap and a torque well above 160 Nm. Transmission-wise, it is expected to get a 6-speed stick shift rather than an expensive 7-speed DCT. This will also enhance the fuel efficiency for the turbo petrol.
