The Thar.e, Mahindra's electric SUV, boasts several key features that have garnered attention as it departs from its ICE version. These include squarish LED headlamps with integrated DRLs, a rugged front and rear bumper, a new clamshell bonnet, and large wheel arches. The SUV showcases a bold new design for its alloy wheels, fitted with off-road tires featuring deep tread patterns. The flat roof and rear section maintain the signature boxy profile, while exposed door hinges add to the rugged character. Inside, the Thar.e offers a spacious and decluttered cabin with a large touchscreen and fully digital instrument console. The elevated center console clearly defines individual spaces. The SUV features a new steering wheel with mounted controls and robust grab handles, emphasizing its off-roading capabilities.

Powertrain, Platform, & More

While the current fuel-powered Thar is built on a ladder-on-frame chassis, the Thar EV will utilize the new INGLO Platform specifically made to offer versatility. The INGLO platform demonstrates remarkable versatility by serving as the foundation for models across different sizes and segments. Its scalability allows it to accommodate a range of wheelbases, lengths, and widths. This flexibility enables it to support a diverse lineup, from the 4.7-meter-long XUV e8 to the 4.3-meter-long BE 05, and even the nearly 5-meter-long BE 09.

The upcoming models will include both 3-door and 5-door variants, and they will be equipped with a dual-motor setup. The INGLO platform is set to incorporate BYD's Blade and Prismatic cells, known for their durability and long-range capabilities. While specific details about the powertrain and battery specifications of Mahindra's upcoming electric vehicles remain undisclosed, the company has revealed that these models will offer options for both single-axle and dual-axle motors, catering to varying requirements. The Thar.e variant, expectedly, may feature a dual axle motor to amplify its 4WD capabilities. As for the battery, speculation suggests a 60kWh battery pack could be integrated.

Meanwhile, as far as the launch of the Thar EV is concerned, the timeline is a bit on the longer side. The BE Range of Mahindra is gearing up for a launch starting next year, so it is safer to say that the Thar EV is still some time away and even a launch ibn 2024 looks bleak.

Verdict

Mahindra's new electric vehicle (EV) lineup is placing a strong emphasis on SUVs. Existing SUV models will transition to the new INGLO platform, adorning the recently revealed EV-specific logo. With an influx of new entrants in the EV SUV segment, the industry is gearing up for intense competition among major players, promising exciting developments and rivalries in the near future.
