Mahindra can't just contain the response and demand from the buyers of the all-new Thar. Global NCAP drops another reason to buy the all-new Mahindra Thar as it has become the safest offroader in India - scores four stars in Global NCAP crash test. The bodyshell has been rated stable and GNCAP also performed the side-impact and ESC test. Surprisingly, The Thar got four stars in both adult safety and child safety - very rare in recent crash tests. Mahindra Thar is also the safest car in India in terms of Child safety!
The Thar achieved four stars for adult and child occupant protection. The Thar offers double frontal airbags as standard. Driver and passenger's head and neck showed good protection. Driver's chest offered adequate protection and passenger's chest showed good protection. The bodyshell has been rated stable but the footwell area is rated unstable which is not capable of taking further loadings. Nonetheless, Mahindra has done a fantastic job with the Mahindra Thar and proved the capability of the new generation of ladder-on-frame chassis. The Thar offers standard ISOFIX anchorages and top tether together with 3 point belts for all seating positions.
It is worth noting that the next-gen Mahindra Scorpio and XUV500 will also be underpinned by the same platform. We won't be surprised if the next-gen XUV500 and the Scorpio score 5 stars in GNCAP crash test. Moreover, the Thar has also performed with the ESC test under UN 95 regulations and performed really well. However, Mahindra Thar lost its grip and Global NCAP shares a scope of improvement. It is worth noting that the ESC is not standard with the Thar and only the top-end trims get that feature.
GNCAP also shared that the side impact of the Thar was not counted in the overall rating as it didn't score five stars in the frontal-offset crash. The side impact test is only taken into consideration when the car scores five out of five stars in the frontal-offset crash test. We expect great safety results from Indian carmakers in the coming future too. It really makes us realise that Indian carmakers have come a long way whereas foreign carmakers neglect safety in India.
