MG Cloud EV Spied Testing: Resembles International Model

Based on initial spy shots, MG Cloud EV appears to blend SUV and crossover elements in its design. The Indian version is expected to closely mirror its international counterpart, featuring a curved front with distinctive split headlights. Connected LED DRLs span the upper portion of the front end, complemented by large headlights integrated into the bumper. The side profile is characterized by a clean, elongated roofline and smooth contours. A charging port is visibly located on the front left fender, and the vehicle rides on stylish 18-inch alloy wheels that elegantly fill the wheel arches.

Similarly, the rear design of the MG's upcoming EV appears sleek and nothing flashy adorns it. A chrome strip runs along the shoulder line, neatly dividing the body from the window line and adding a touch of contrast to the body color. The taillight is a simple connected strip that spans the width of the tailgate. For the India-spec model, adjustments akin to those seen on the Comet EV are anticipated, potentially incorporating localized changes to suit the country's regulations and market demands.

Interior And Features

Although the interiors of the MG Cloud EV test mule could not be caught on camera, it is expected to be in line with the Global model currently on sale. The MG Cloud EV is poised to introduce a host of advanced features, such as a prominent centrally positioned floating infotainment screen, wireless charging capabilities, dual-zone automatic climate control, ventilated seats, and an 8.8-inch full LCD instrument display. It will also integrate LingOS 2.0 ecological cockpit technology, enhancing both comfort and eco-friendliness in the driving experience. In terms of safety, the Cloud EV is expected to offer up to 6 airbags, a comprehensive 360-degree camera system, and an Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite, among other advanced safety features.

MG Cloud EV: Battery, Range & Specs

Internationally, the Cloud EV is equipped with a 50.6 kWh battery pack and a front-mounted single electric motor, delivering 136 PS and 200 Nm of torque. According to CLTC standards, it boasts an impressive range of 460 km. Alternatively, other global markets offer a variant with a 37.9 kWh battery pack, providing a claimed range of 360 km. The Cloud EV supports DC fast charging, enabling the 50.6 kWh battery to recharge from 30% to 100% in just 30 minutes. Charging from 20% to 100% using an AC home charger takes approximately 7 hours. However, the specific powertrain option for the Indian market has yet to be finalized.

Expected to be priced between Rs. 18-20 lakhs, the Cloud EV is poised to compete directly with the upcoming Tata Nexon EV,  Hyundai Creta EV, and others. Its launch is anticipated towards the end of 2024.

Verdict

MG ZS EV and the Comet EV have not garnered much market share and continues to sell just decently. The Cloud EV will be the brand's big bet for a renewed push in the EV space in the country. However, going head to head with the Tata Nexon EV or the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV will be an uphill task for a new moniker in terms of evoking the sense of trust and urging the masses to shift loyalty. But the specs and pospects feel promising and it could in fact, usher in a new era for the brand in the EV space.
