Diesel Engine Comeback: A Wise Decision?
During the recent business announcement of the upcoming compact SUV, Petr Janeba, Head of international sales, confirmed that the next-gen Superb will get a diesel engine option. The next-gen Superb is scheduled to debut in India by late 2025. With its debut, it'll get a new diesel powertrain that will be a direct import.
But, why this decision when the diesel engines have been axed already? It seems like the brand fanatics and owners have been repeatedly asking for a diesel grunt. The earlier models came equipped with various TDi engines. Those were widely appreciated for their performance and fuel economy. Skoda has decided to bring their technology back with a refined form.
Globally, Skoda Superb is offered with three petrol, two diesel, and one plug-in-hybrid engine options. Skoda will reintroduce the luxury sedan by the end of next year in India. Upon its debut, it'll get a diesel engine that will be a CBU (completely built unit) import. This is a planned part of the company's 'India 2.0' strategy that began with the Kushaq and Slavia.
With that said, this is also big news for the Skoda Kodiaq buyers as it shares its engines with the Superb globally. Hence, there is a possibility that the Kodiaq will also get this diesel engine in the coming future, thus, making the competition hard for the Toyota Fortuner.
Verdict
Skoda discontinued the Superb last year as it couldn't meet the BS6 phase two emission norms. However, the luxury sedan is loved by the current owners and the repeated requests to bring back diesel engines have led to this developement.
