Tata Motors To Make JLR EVs in Tamil Nadu?
As reported by Autocar India, Tata is eyeing setting up a new production facility in Tamil Nadu. This manufacturing plant will be primarily used to manufacture the Jaguar and Land Rover EVs. Currently, Tata has a commitment to investing Rs 1.5 lakh crore in the JLR brand in the next decade. This commitment includes a plan to transform Jaguar into a complete EV brand. Meanwhile, the Land Rover cars will get EV iterations by 2026.
To create a better space for cost-effective manufacturing and export, the Tamil Nadu facility will come in handy. As per the online report, this EV manufacturing plant will have a capacity of up to 2 lakh units annually. Out of these, 75 percent of units will be JLR EVs while the rest 25 percent will be the upcoming Tata EVs. The majority of these models will be exported from this facility.
Moreover, Tata plans to shift the ICE powertrain production of JLR to India. This is due to the stringent anti-ICE policies of the UK which are going to affect the brand's global manufacturing in the future. Hence, shifting a major chunk of this production to India will be helpful to the brand.
JLR has already showcased its Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform. The EMA platform will house the future EVs from the brand. Tata plans to make the EMA models via this Tamil Nadu facility. Additionally, the source claims that a multi-billion pound deal will take place by this year's end between Tata and JLR. This deal will conclude by making four EV models for each brand. If so, these models will likely be manufactured via the upcoming production plant in Tamil Nadu.
