Toyota Kirloskar Motors (TKM) has once again been spied testing the Yaris hatchback on the Indian roads. It must be noted here that this car has been spied even earlier and we have already posted a video from the last time we saw this vehicle road-testing. Also, the Yaris sedan was recently pulled off the shelves and we wonder if the hatchback sibling if launched here, would be able to fare any better.

That said, we must mention here that the carmaker doesn't seem to have any plans of launching this hatchback anytime soon. Most probably, the reason this car has repeatedly been seen on our roads is that the carmaker could be using the vehicle for component testing. The road conditions of our country offer a good testbed to carmakers and it's certainly not the first time we've seen a car that's not headed to our market testing on our roads.

As you must have been able to make out from the spy media on this page, the Toyota Yaris hatchback looks nothing like the sedan that used to be on sale in the country. Instead, it has a totally different design language and looks rather sporty due to elements like a roof spoiler, curvaceous tallamps, skid plates and sharkfin antennae. The side profile of the vehicle looks quite simple and the front-end is in-line with other Toyota cars from this generation. Overall, however, the car has a sporty stance and its compact dimensions and clean styling even lends it a rather cutesy look.
Underpinning the Toyota Yaris hatchback is the carmaker's GA-B platform. This model measures less than 4 metre in length, which makes it a tad smaller than its predecessor when it comes to the overall length.
In the international car markets, the Toyota Yaris hatchback has been available with three engine options. The smallest of these is a 1.0-litre petrol motor that outputs 116 bhp of maximum power and 120 Nm of peak torque. The bigger motors include a 1.5-litre petrol mill that produces a maximum power of 118 bhp and a peak torque of 140 Nm, and a 1.5-litre petrol hybrid engine that outputs a maximum power of 195 bhp and a peak torque of 261 Nm.
Another reason the launch of the Yaris hatchback is unlikely to take place in India is that the carmaker already has a model available in this segment. Based on the Maruti Baleno, the Toyota Glanza has been on sale for a while now and has even garnered decent sales for the local subsidiary of the Japanese carmaker giant. The Glanza locks horns with cars like the Hyundai i20 and Honda Jazz along with even competing with its donor model.
