The anticipation hints that a new mild-hybrid diesel engine will find its way under the bonnet of the new car.

The prototype test car was spotted in Thailand recently. The new spy shots went viral globally over the internet. Fortuner enjoys a strong market share internationally along with the Indian market. Thailand is a core market for Toyota & hence it will be no big surprise that the new Fortuner will debut there first. The test mule suggests to us that the new model will use a completely redesigned front. Although, the overall dimensions will most likely remain the same. The red brake calipers over the test car suggest that it could be a GR version of the upcoming car.
While the outlook can not be described right now due to heavy camo; the upcoming Fortuner will use a new diesel engine. To equip the SUV with more fuel efficiency, linear power delivery, & full of on-demand torque, the new engine will use mild-hybrid tech. Many companies use this tech to increase the fuel efficiency of their products which are limited to petrol power. Upcoming Fortuner will become the first diesel car to use this tech.
Speculations hint that a 1GD-FTV 2.8-Lt, a turbocharged unit from Thailand-based Fortuner will be used. This engine comes in the GR variant in the Thai market. Toyota will use an Integrated Starter Generator (IGS) with this new unit. The company might use the 'GD Hybrid' nomenclature with the new Fortuner in the Indian market. This tech will make Fortuner one of the most fuel-efficient SUVs on market.

There are no more details regarding what power and torque this engine will make. In Thailand, the 1GD-FTV engine produces 204 hp of peak power & 500 Nm of peak torque. Toyota offers it with a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox with paddle shifters. With the use of battery pack & tech such as battery regen, we expect that the power & torque will increase.
The new Fortuner will most probably launch in Thailand at first. The global debut along with the Indian debut will take place shortly after. We anticipate that the new mild-hybrid Fortuner will debut in the first half of 2023. While the new hybrid Fortuner is still far from the Indian launch, Toyota Hyryder mid-size hybrid SUV is about to make a global debut in India in the next month. It is being jointly developed with the Maruti Suzuki YFG & will rival the Hyundai Creta & KIA Seltos directly.
