Tata Punch CNG - Better Than The Rivals?
Tata's twin-cylinder tech for CNG is being considered revolutionary. Recently, the Altroz CNG was launched in India. It also features the same twin-cylinder tech. Hence, the Punch CNG will also follow in its footsteps and use the twin-cylinder tech. While the design of the Punch CNG is expected to remain identical, it'll surely get more features. As we saw on the Altroz CNG, the Punch CNG is also expected to get a sunroof, wireless mobile charger, & even an air purifier. Apart from this, the majority of the car will be more or less the same as its ICE variants.
The major change will be with the engine. The current model is only offered with a 1.2-lt naturally aspirated petrol engine. However, the CNG variant will get the same engine as the Altroz CNG. The 1.2-lt CNG engine makes a peak power of 73.5 PS. It is mated to a 5-speed gearbox. While the Altroz is offered with a 60 lt capacity of CNG tanks, Punch might get smaller tanks due to less width. Also, Tata will re-tune this engine and gear ratios to accommodate better efficiency as well as a good balance of ride & handling. As the test mule is seen with a production-ready paint and an i-CNG badge (hidden with tape) as well; we expect that it'll debut soon. Even its competition is going to get tough as the Hyundai Exter CNG is going to debut on 10 July. The Hyundai Exter will also get a CNG version.
Verdict
The current Punch range starts from Rs 6 lakh (ex-showroom). The CNG version, however, will be priced at a premium of Rs 1 lakh (expected) over the petrol variants. As rumoured, Tata will debut the Punch CNG in India in the upcoming festive season. It'll also rival the Citroen C3 but the Citroen doesn't come with a CNG version.
