Yamaha YZF-R1 and R1M: No update To The latest Eu5+ regulations For The Models
According to reports, Yamaha is planning to discontinue the Yamaha YZF-R1 and R1M road models in Europe. This decision stems from the fact that Yamaha Europe has confirmed that the road versions of these bikes may not receive updates to comply with the latest EU5+ regulations.
As a result, Yamaha might not have a production model in the litre-class category in the near future, effectively ending the era of the iconic R1.
The rationale behind this move is that Yamaha Motor Group has chosen not to develop an EU5+ version of the R1 or R1M. Instead, they are directing their efforts towards other mid-term business and product strategies, which they believe will offer future opportunities.

Yamaha's Potential Strategy For Non-Euro5+ Compliant Bikes
The deadline for selling bikes not meeting Euro5+ standards is 2025, while Euro6 regulations are expected later. This leaves room for potential models like the rumoured Yamaha R9, although not officially confirmed.
Yamaha could continue selling these bikes for a few years in markets with less strict emissions rules.
Yamaha India: From Big Bikes to Midsize Models
Yamaha halted big bike production in India due to stricter emissions rules in 2020. After focusing on smaller bikes and scooters in 2021, they launched the YZF-R3 and MT-03.
Now, they're eyeing midsize sports bikes like the R7 and MT-07, showcased since last year. At the recent Bharat Mobility Expo in February 2024, Yamaha unveiled the R1 and NMax 155 maxi-scooter.
Verdict
Yamaha's decision to stop selling the YZF-R1 and R1M in Europe because of stricter EU5+ regulations signals a big change in their plans. This suggests they're thinking more about what customers in growing markets want and making sure they follow the rules.
