Tata Tiago iCNG has launched & we've put it through its paces. Here we explain the 5 things that could have been improved .
Launched aggressively at a price of Rs 6.10 lakhs; Tata Tiago is the most powerful CNG hatchback available on sale today. We've already tested it thoroughly which you can read in our review by clicking here.
Reviewing it intensively here are the 5 things that we've found needed improvement over the competitors:
1. Engine Refinement (NVH)
Tata Tiago iCNG is powered by 1.2 Lt Revotron Bi-Fuel engine which produces a good peak power of 73 PS & 95NM of torque. Although it sounds good on paper, in our tests we found that the engine lacks refinement that rivals offer.
There is lack of luster in top end performance. If pushed towards limits, Tiago iCNG engine feels strained. Noticeable vibrations are felt from idle itself & they remain constant until redline. On the move, Tiago feels calm & composed but not as good as competitors.
Another thing we noticed is the jerkiness in constant throttle which maybe because of the bi-fuel issues. This isn't very prominent & shall go unnoticed in your daily commutes.
2. Heavy Weight
A kerb weight of 1126 Kgs isn't exactly 'light' for a small car like Tiago. Heavy weight of Tiago is clearly felt behind the steering wheel. Engine performance isn't as good as expected while reading the brochure.
73PS of peak power feels fast on paper but due to the heavy material used for tough build quality, Tiago isn't really fast. The 1.2 Lt Revotorn engine does the duty just adequate.
Slick 5-speed manual transmission is good to counter this affect of weight over performance but the car lacks 'wow' factor. Although sufficient for daily city commutes & occasional highway trips; it isn't exactly an enthusiasts delight.
3. Cabin Fit & Finish
Second area that Tiago iCNG lags is the overall cabin fit & finish. Already noted in our official review, cabin of Tiago isn't as well put as the rivalry. Material quality is good but use of hard plastics along a few uneven panel gaps is prominent in cabin. An improvement is required in this area.
With that said, Tiago is a feature loaded spacious car. Convenient features like auto climate control, cooled glovebox, digital instrument console, and a 6-way adjustable driver's seat are segment first which competitors do not offer.
4. Rear Seat Space
Fixed read headrests, lack of adequate storage spaces mixed with the overall shortage of thigh support & headroom makes Tiago fall behind the competitors.
Rivals like Maruti Suzuki WagonR CNG has more space at rear. Ample of headroom, adjustable headrests, adequate thigh support is missing in Tiago.
With an average adult of height 5'10" seating in front; rear passengers will find themselves finding positions for a comfortable trip.
5. Lack Of Bottle Holders
Last but not the least is the missing of adequate space for bottle holders inside the cabin. Door pads have narrow tunnels that aren't capable for large water bottle holding.
Along this, the center console also has small cup holders which you'll find yourselves fumbling upon for comfortably placing your coffee during those morning commutes to office.
We feel Tata should've reworked this downer of an overall good cabin space.
