Morris Garages made its Indian debut in June 2019 with the Hector mid-size SUV. Morris Garages or rather say MG Motor is basically a British-originated Chinese-owned carmaker. MG's first car in India, the MG Hector became an instant hit in the country owing to multiple reasons. Following the Hector, the company launched the ZS EV and then came the Hector Plus. The new MG Hector Plus is an enhanced six-seater version of the Hector mid-size SUV. The company got an excellent response from the market for the new Hector Plus and we can see quite a lot of them on the roads too. So, today we will be telling you why the new Hector Plus is selling so much? Here, we have for you the Pros and Cons of the new 2020 MG Hector Plus BS6.
2020 MG Hector Plus BS6 Pros and Cons
Pros
Looks Handsome and Sheer Dimensions
The new MG Hector Plus is a handsome-looking SUV. In fact, personally to me, it looks even better than the Hector. While the five-seater Hector has a lot of chrome accents, the new six-seater Hector Plus gets subtle chrome inserts and a lot of blacked-out elements which works in its favour and enhances its aesthetic appeal. The design elements of the MG Hector Plus include a large grille, all-LED headlights with daytime-running LEDs, LED taillights, 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, among others. The MG Hector is a long SUV and the Hector Plus is even longer. Here are its dimensions:
Specification | MG Hector Plus |
Length | 4695 mm |
Width | 1760 mm |
Height | 1835 mm |
Wheelbase | 2750 mm |
Ground Clearance | 192 mm |
Boot Space | 155-litres (with all three-row seats up) |
Fuel Tank | 60-litre |
Max. Tyre Size | 17-inch |
Spacious Cabin and Plush Ride Quality
The next positive thing about the new Hector Plus is its spacious cabin. As you might have already seen in the above table, the Hector Plus is a very long SUV and it gets a wheelbase of around 2750 mm. Thanks to its massive wheelbase, it has a very spacious cabin. The cabin of the Hector Plus feels very premium, thanks to the new brown-coloured upholstery, it has a lot of space and the best thing about it are its captain seats. The Hector Plus is a six-seater SUV, and it gets two captain seats in the middle row which are very comfortable. Also, it has an excellent ride quality. It offers a very plush & comfy ride and its ride quality is definitely one of the best in its segment.
Loaded To The Gills
Like we all know, the new entrants like the MG and the Kia load their cars with features up to the brim and same is the case here. The Hector Plus is a very feature-loaded car. It gets a big 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system which is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It also gets MG's new i-Smart 2.0 connected car tech with around 55 connected car features. Some other features of the car include a massive panoramic sunroof, smart swipe auto tailgate, eight-colour ambient lighting, etc. and the feature list goes on. It also gets a host of safety features including up to six airbags, ABS with EBD, all-wheel disc brakes, front and rear parking sensors, 360-degree parking camera, ESP, TCS, hill hold assist and more.
Good Powertrain Options
The powertrain options of the MG Hector Plus offer good performance. It gets a BS6-compliant 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that churns out 143 PS of power at 5000 RPM and 250 Nm of peak torque between 1600-3600 RPM. This petrol mill is available with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system too. The non-hybrid petrol motor comes paired to a six-speed DCT (dual-clutch transmission) while the petrol hybrid comes mated to a six-speed manual gearbox only. It also gets a BS6-compliant 2.0-litre diesel engine. This oil-burner churns out 170 PS of power at 3750 RPM and 350 Nm of peak torque between 1750-2500 RPM. The engine comes mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and it delivers good fuel economy too.
Attractive Price
The MG Hector Plus was launched in India in July 2020 at an introductory starting price of Rs. 13.48 lakhs, Ex-showroom pan-India. However, later its price was hiked by up to 46,000 rupees. Also, upon launch, the Hector Plus was available in Style, Super, Smart and Sharp variants. But, recently the company discontinued the base Style variants of the car owing to the poor demand and so now it is available in Super, Smart and Sharp variants only. The price of the MG Hector Plus BS6 now starts at Rs. 15.70 lakhs and the top model fetches up to Rs. 18.69 lakhs. All prices stick to Ex-showroom pan-India (except Kerala). At this price point, the Hector Plus is a great offering and its detailed variant-wise new prices are mentioned in the table below:
Hector Plus Variant | Price (Ex-showroom pan-India) |
Smart Petrol DCT | Rs. 16.70 lakhs |
Sharp Petrol DCT | Rs. 18.36 lakhs |
Sharp Petrol Hybrid MT | Rs. 17.39 lakhs |
Super Diesel MT | Rs. 15.70 lakhs |
Smart Diesel MT | Rs. 17.20 lakhs |
Sharp Diesel MT | Rs. 18.69 lakhs |
Cons
No Diesel Automatic Combination
Now, moving to the negatives, so the first con of the MG Hector Plus is that it doesn't get a diesel-automatic combination. The 2.0-litre diesel engine of the Hector Plus is a great powertrain option. This oil-burner churns out 170 PS of maximum power at 3750 RPM and 350 Nm of peak torque between 1750-2500 RPM. It is very fuel-efficient too. However, it doesn't offer the choice and convenience of an automatic. The engine comes mated to a six-speed manual gearbox only. The addition of automatic transmission would have been really nice, considering its rivals also offer the choice of an AT.
The Third Row Offers Limited Space
Well, in the pros section, we told you that the new Hector Plus has a very spacious cabin. Yes, that's correct. The Hector Plus is a very long car and it has acres of space inside the cabin, but only for the first and the second row of passengers. The third-row seats look good but they are literally placed on the floor and have very limited usage. It is meant strictly for the kids or you can fold those seats and use it as a normal SUV with an enormous boot.
Touchscreen Could Have Been Better
The next downside of the new MG Hector Plus is its touchscreen. Well, it is not a big negative but we are just nit-picking things. The MG Hector Plus gets a massive 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with almost all sorts of connectivity features you will ever require in a car. However, this large touchscreen isn't very fluidic to use and it sometimes misses out the touch response. That been said, these minor glitches might be fixed in due course of time by OTA or over-the-air updates.
Limited Dealerships and Service Stations
The last con is actually not the con of the vehicle, instead, it is about the car manufacturer. MG Motors is a new carmaker in India. The company made its debut in the Indian market in June 2019 and being a new entrant, the company has only a limited number of dealerships in the country. MG has around 151 dealerships across the country as of now. MG is continuously working hard to expand its footprint across the length and breadth of the country. As of now, you cannot get an MG dealership everywhere in India.
So, these were the Top 5 Pros and 4 Cons of the new 2020 MG Hector Plus BS6. It rivals against a lot of MPVs and SUVs like the Toyota Innova Crysta, Mahindra XUV500, Tata Harrier, Jeep Compass, and the likes. What are your thoughts on the new MG Hector Plus?
