Last year in October, Mahindra launched the iconic SUV, the 2020 Thar. The popularity is such that the waiting period of the SUV is close to 12 months in some cities. Now, recent intel tells us that the bookings for the Mahindra Thar have crossed to more than 55,000 unit and 47% of the buyers opt for the automatic version.
Sharing details on the mechanicals first, the new Mahindra Thar packs in two engine options - a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel unit and a more powerful 2.0L mStallion petrol motor. The petrol motor churns out 150 PS of power with a peak torque of 320 Nm while the diesel generates 130 PS and 300 Nm of peak torque. Both the engines come with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard and an optional 6-speed automatic unit.
Mahindra Thar is the only affordable and safest off-roader present in the country right now. According to the Global NCAP, the new Thar successfully scored a 4-star crash rating despite based on a ladder on frame chassis. The new Thar scored 41.11 out of 49 in the child occupancy.

The safety features of the new Thar include dual airbags, front seat belt reminder, ISOFIX points, high-speed alert system, rear parking sensors, electronic stability control with rollover mitigation technology, antilock braking system and electronic brake-force distribution as standard.
In other news, Mahindra is also planning to bring the 5-door version of the Thar by 2023. The five-door version of the Thar will offer more boot space and a roomier cabin due to the increase in length and wheelbase. Mechanically, it will continue with the same engine options.
