The most popular full-size SUV in India, the Toyota Fortuner has always been the first choice of diesel lovers and performance enthusiasts. Due to the increasingly stringent emission norms and regulations that most companies have decided to shift towards electric vehicles, Toyota is one of the few major players in the industry who will keep focusing on ICE and hybrids. The turbocharged engine will power the next-gen Toyota Fortuner and Hilux as well. Toyota's new Petrol Turbocharged Masterpiece
Reports suggest that the new turbo petrol engine in the works will be used in the next-gen Toyota Fortuner and Hilux. The new powertrain will also power some of the brand's international offerings such as the Toyota MR2 and Celica.
However, the turbo petrol in talks can be tuned to deliver different power figures, it is expected to generate 300 hp of power and 400 Nm of torque on the Fortuner and Hilux. The automaker will use another version- 400 hp and 549 Nm for other models. Additionally, there will be a 600 hp version as well which will be utilized for the competition vehicles.
To Power the Fortuner and Hilux?
it is not confirmed that the new turbo petrol engine will power the next-gen Fortuner and Hilux to be launched in 2025. Taking note of the fact that the Fortuner SUV is reaching the end of its life cycle, it makes sense to introduce the new powertrain with the updated SUV to show it like an all-new upgraded package.
There are possibilities that Toyota will offer the new turbo petrol engine and some selected variants of the SUV. Some reports suggest that it would be a GR-Sport variant of the SUV. If these reports prove to be true, the 2.0-litre turbo petrol unit will replace the legendary 2.8-litre diesel mill on the SUV.
Green-fuel-compliant and More Efficient
The automaker has already announced that its new engines will run on petrol/diesel and other green fuels as well. These fuels include synthetic fuels, ethanol and liquid hydrogen. It will also power the brand's hybrid car, making them more efficient. Apart from this, Toyota also claims that its new 2.0-litre turbo unit is 30 per cent more efficient which helps reduce carbon emissions. Internationally, the 2.0-litre turbo will replace the 2.4-litre turbo units on offer in some models. Toyota also says that its new engine is smaller in size (around 10 per cent) and capable of generating more power as well.
The new engine options will also include a 1,5 litre NA and turbo version of the same. The 1.5-litre iteration will be 30 per cent more efficient than the currently available 2.5-litre NA engine. Basically, the brand is going to introduce three new engines, all 4 cylinder, and inline.
