Recently Tata Motors unveiled its all-new micro-SUV, Punch in the market. The car will directly compete against the likes of Maruti Suzuki Ignis which has been available in the market for a long time and is the only crossover inspired B1 hatchbacks in the market hitting the sales chart. Tata Punch vs Maruti Suzuki Ignis - Design and Dimensions

Tata Motors in recent times have worked hard to update its portfolio. The latest models carry a modern design with enhanced features and advanced technologies. From the front end, Tata Punch looks a bit similar to its elder siblings Harrier and Safari and due to its signature grille, the car also looks similar to Tata Nexon. Punch offers multi lighting tail light section, projector headlamps and integrated Daytime Running Lights (DRLs), 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, and stylish roof rails.

Whereas Maruti Suzuki Ignis gets an oddball grill and even the front bumper looks a bit overdone which makes Punch look better and carry a stand-alone design. The side profile of the Ignis is a love it or hate it a design that might seem attractive to some but not to everyone. It gets 15-inch black coloured alloy wheels, a floating effect roof, a well-shaped profile, and plastic claddings. Punch gets a better wheel size and alloy wheels as compared to Ignis. Both the cars are crossover inspired hatchbacks but Punch has a sense of identity with its modern looks and design language. 

At the rear end, Punch looks a bit like a European car whereas the design of the Ignis from behind is not liked by all. Punch looks like a mini Harrier on roads and looks better than Ignis. Ignis from inside now looks ordinary as it is an old player whereas Punch carries a fresh and new design language even inside the cabin. Ignis gets a minimalist dashboard design language whereas Punch gets an eye-catching dashboard that gives a premium and stylish feel. Ignis features an analogue instrument cluster with a TFT display and Tata Punch offers a semi-digital instrument cluster in which except the tachometer everything else is digital. Both the cars get a touchscreen infotainment system compatible with Android Auto and Apple Carplay. Ignis gets a better reverse camera whereas Punch also gets a reverse camera that is a bit grainy and not that clear than Ignis.

On comparing the dimensions of the two, Tata Punch is obviously bigger in dimensions.

Let's take a look at the features both the automotive giants are offering with their hatchbacks. Tata Punch offers some features which are not available in Ignis like cruise control, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, and auto-folding ORVMs but yes both the cars get a touch screen infotainment system with reverse parking camera, all four power windows, central locking, push button start, LED DRLs and projector headlamps.

 Both the cars will give the driver a feel of a micro SUV. both the cars are well sorted with the driving positions and the ergonomics it carries. Ignis at the rear gets a better legroom and shoulder room compared to Punch. But at the same time, Punch gets a flattering flooring at the rear. Now let's glance at the safety features both the cars offer. ABS with EBD, dual front airbags, rear parking camera with sensors, ISOFix child fix but Punch offers a traction control system which isn't available with Ignis.

The Tata Punch is powered by a 1.2-L Revotron engine that can churn out 86ps of peak power output with 113 Nm of peak torque. The car is mated to a 5-speed manual or an automatic gearbox. While this engine boasts a strong low-end and commendable city drivability, it does lack in the refinement and NVH departments. The fuel economy is impressive and the Punch offers two driving modes - city and eco mode as standard. In addition to this, features like Dyna-Pro Tech and Traction Pro help the car drive impressive performance in every situation.

The Maruti Ignis gets the brand's 1.2-litre K12B petrol engine that churns out 83 PS of maximum power and 113 Nm of peak torque output. Just like Punch, Ignis is also mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard while the buyers can also opt for the optional 5-speed AMT gearbox. When compared to the Punch, the Ignis not only delivers better performance but has a  lighter kerb weight that makes it more fuel-efficient. Ignis also leads the game when it comes to engine refinement and NVH levels inside the cabin.

The engine installed in Ignis is a much-refined engine as compared to Tata Punch. Punch offers a three-cylinder engine that produces vibrations whereas Ignis comes with a four-cylinder engine. 

Final Verdict

Considering the AMT variants of both the hatchbacks, Tata Punch is slightly better than Ignis in all aspects. Both the cars get perfect braking and riding quality. Be it the looks, features, ride and handling Punch is above Ignis but Ignis takes away the scenario if performance is considered as a question. Punch will definitely have an edge over the Ignis.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis is available with four variants - Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha whereas Punch is also available with four variants choices only - Pure, Adventure, Accomplished, and Creative. Ignis starts at Rs 5.10 lakhs (ex-showroom) and goes up to Rs 7.47 lakhs (ex-showroom). Suzuki has played smart with the pricing to make it affordable for all. 

On the other hand, Tata has also played smart with the pricing but is more expensive than Ignis. Punch starts at Rs 5.49 lakhs (ex-showroom) and goes up to Rs 9.09 lakhs (ex-showroom). The base variants of both the hatchbacks have a difference of Rs 39,000 whereas the top-end variants can spot a difference of Rs 1,62,000. The comparison between both the hatchbacks are right in front of you, choose wisely.
