Renault Kwid
The Renault Kwid is a small hatchback that doesn’t need much space to maneuver through traffic or navigate narrow lanes, making U-turns and parking effortless. One of its biggest highlights is that it's the cheapest car in India with an automatic gearbox, priced at Rs 5.44 lakh. The 999 cc engine doesn’t feel underpowered during city commutes, and achieving over 22 kmpl of mileage is a breeze with this car. Features like an infotainment screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, along with a digital driver’s display, elevate the interior ambiance. That said, don’t set your expectations too high, but be ready to be surprised by its capabilities.

Expert Verdict on Kwid
The Renault Kwid is a great, small, peppy hatchback. It meets the Indian customer's needs on a budget. It has good features, decent space, and a frugal petrol engine. It is a great city car for your daily commute. Though the dealer and service network of Renault is a little less as compared to its rival, it provides tough competition in the segment. Hence it is a good choice for young and old age buyers, seeking a small hatchback in the segment.
Pros & Cons of Renault Kwid
Should I buy the Kwid?
The Renault Kwid is a great family car. It is for those who are buying their first car. It offers good features, a refined petrol engine, and good safety features. It is a good car in the segment, giving a fight to the Alto K10 and S-Presso. It has good safety features like TPMS, hill start assist, and traction control. It also has great features like reverse parking sensors and an LED digital instrument cluster. If you are still confused about the Kwid, you can check other options in the segment, like the Alto K10 or the S-Presso.
- The design language of the Kwid is very similar to the elder sibling Kiger from the front. It has a split headlight setup with LED DRL connecting the logo with the chrome line and halogen units for the headlights and indicators. This provides a bold face and a strong character. The throw of these headlights is decent and could have been improved. It has a black bumper to reduce the visual bulk.
- Coming to the side, it has 14” alloy wheels in the top trims and steel wheels in the lower variants. It has an old-school door handle style and the black color reduces the visual appeal. The dual-tone treatment is available in the Climber version only. It has an unladen ground clearance of 184mm which is great for the city conditions.
- At the rear, it has a simple and elegant design language. It has an LED guide for the taillamps and a halogen unit for the reverse lamp and indicators. The loading lib is decent and stuffing luggage isn’t an issue. It has a boot space of 280L and is expandable up to 620L by folding the rear seats. The rear bumper has the same black treatment as the front to resemble a similar design.
- As we step inside the cabin of the Kwid, it has a great ambiance at first glance. The interior is all-black but the window area is large enough to bring in light. The plastic quality is hard and scratchy. The dashboard has KWID branding in case you forget which car you are driving. The dual-tone seat treatment enhances the visual appeal inside.
- The cabin has decent space for the passengers. The 8” touchscreen infotainment system supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It has a slick touch response. It has a crisp display and might be a fingerprint magnet. It has manual controls for the air-conditioning and cools the cabin in no time. It has the AMT rotary dial on the floor to ease out space inside the cabin.
- The LED digital display for the instrument cluster is a great feature on offer. It has some great features like TPMS, Hill Start Assist, reverse parking sensors, etc.
- Coming to the engine bay of the Kwid, it has got a 1L 3-cylinder petrol engine which has decent power output and refinement levels are decent.
- Talking about specifications, this motor churns out 68 BHP and 91 Nm of peak torque. It is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or an AMT transmission. It misses out on the CNG option that its rivals offer.
- Considering the fuel efficiency factor, it has a decent fuel efficiency. In the real world, it would return 17-20 km/L in the city conditions depending on the driving style. On highways, it should return about 23-25 km/L which is great in its segment from a small car.
- The engine refinement level is okayish and there are some vibrations and engine noise that can be felt inside the cabin and on the panels.
Kwid engine specifications:
Transmission | Manual & Automatic |
Mileage | 21.7 kmpl to 22 kmpl |
Engine | 999 cc |
Power | 67.06 bhp @ 5500 rpm |
Torque | 91 Nm @ 4250 rpm |
Drive Train | FWD |
- The seating comfort of the Renault Kwid is decent. The seats are large enough for the front passengers and fixed headrests take away the fun. The cabin isn’t wide enough so shoulders might rub against each other.
- Coming to the rear seats, it has good comfort levels. It has a decent amount of knee room, and leg room on offer, but 3 passengers will be a very tight fit since the cabin isn’t wide enough. The headroom might be a constraint and rivals offer better cabin experience.
- The suspension of the Kwid is tuned on the softer side. It absorbs bumps and potholes very well and does not filter anything inside the cabin. The ride quality can be a bit bouncy at higher speeds and expansion joints can be felt.
- The steering wheel is light in the city conditions. It is easy to toggle and maneuver in bumper-to-bumper conditions. On highways, it has a decent feel and feedback and could have been a better unit.
