All New BYD eMAX 7 Pros And Cons - Check Before Buying

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • There are two battery packs, and the 71.8 kWh battery pack has a claimed range of 530 km.
  • The new design uses a lot of chrome to make this car stand out from the rest.
  • The BYD eMAX 7 doesn't offer powered captain seats, Level 2 ADAS or multi-zone climate control, despite costing over Rs 25 lakh.

BYD, the world's largest EV manufacturer, has launched the eMAX 7, an electric MPV in India, at a starting price of Rs 26.90 lakh ex-showroom. This is not a completely new vehicle, as BYD previously introduced the e6, which has now been upgraded and rebranded as the eMAX 7. This vehicle boasts two battery packs and is available in two variants, along with 6- and 7-seat configurations.

It appears that BYD has done its homework and created a product well-suited to Indian customers and their paramount requirements from a car. But does this mean that this vehicle is perfect? Let's find out in this overview of the BYD eMAX 7's pros and cons. In the meantime, make sure to join the 91Wheels WhatsApp Channel to never miss out on automotive updates.

Two Battery Packs With Impressive Range

BYD eMAX 7
Two Variants: Premium And Superior

BYD is offering two battery packs in the eMAX 7: a 55.4 kWh pack for the Premium variant and a 71.8 kWh pack for the Superior variant, both using in-house Blade Batteries. The range of the regular pack is 420 km according to NEDC testing, while the larger pack offers an impressive 530 km, also tested under NEDC (New European Driving Cycle).

If tested under MIDC Part 1 and Part 2, these range figures may differ, but not to a significant extent. The torque from both battery packs is the same at 310 Nm, but the power output of the 55.4 kWh pack is 163 PS, while the second pack offers 203 PS.

Updated Styling

BYD has learned that Indians love chrome finishes and elegant designs, so they have updated the front of the eMAX 7 (formerly known as the e6). This EV features a dragon face design, highlighted by a striking bumper adorned with chrome accents. It also includes Crystal Diamond Floating LED headlamps, which come with an Intelligent High Beam Control (IHBC) function.

Apart from the front, the R17 diamond-cut alloy wheels are all new, along with a brand-new tail lamp design that is somewhat reminiscent of the Audi A6. Overall, this vehicle looks beautiful, and those who love an elegant shape with plenty of chrome will be attracted to it.

6 and 7 Seater Option

Normally, we see that in larger cars, the 7-seat option is cheaper than the 6-seat option because automakers have to fit larger captain seats in the rear and provide various electronic functions such as powered seats, lumbar support, and a parcel tray. However, in the case of BYD, its the opposite: the 6-seater eMAX 7 is cheaper than the 7-seater version. Additionally, in the 6-seater option, they haven't included features like powered seats or other amenities mentioned above.

To be specific, here is the price list of BYD eMAX 7:

  • Premium 6 Seater - Rs 26,90,000
  • Premium 7 Seater - Rs 27,50,000
  • Superior 6 Seater - Rs 29,30,000
  • Superior 7 Seater - Rs 29,90,000

Competitive Pricing

This is a great pricing strategy by BYD for such a large electric MPV. It starts at Rs 26.90 lakh and offers an option for second-row captain seats, without compromising on many important features. Additionally, this EV has a starting range of 420 km, which is more than adequate for those who primarily want to use it in the city. Other cars customers can consider in this price bracket include the Hyundai Alcazar, Toyota Innova Hycross, Tata Safari, and Mahindra XUV700, but they all come with internal combustion engines.

BYD eMAX 7 Cons

Low On Features

BYD eMAX 7

Despite receiving a facelift, BYD has opted not to include popular features such as rear ventilated seats, fully digital drivers display, dual-zone climate control, Head up display, rear wireless charging pad and Level 2 ADAS. All these latest features are available in cars that come at a similar price point. While there are no real competitors for this vehicle, customers seeking a captain seat in the second row along with all the tech may consider the all-new Alcazar.

Talking more about it, let's not forget its interior design, which honestly feels old-school. The AC vents, steering wheel, and analog tachometer dont align with current trends, so people might be discouraged when they see it in real life.

180L Of Boot Space

BYD eMAX 7
180 L of Boot Space

This is a 3-row car designed for large families, allowing them to travel long distances together and in comfort. However, the boot space with all rows up is limited to only 180 liters, which is disappointingly low for 6 or 7 people. Ultimately, passengers may have to keep their luggage on their laps or travel without any bags.

This is a significant drawback because the Innova Hycross, India's favorite MPV, offers 300 liters of boot space with the third row up. The Innova allows you to travel anywhere with your luggage, which is not the case with the eMAX 7.

Limited BYD Network

This is not a con of the eMAX 7 itself, but rather its maker, BYD. In the ocean of automobile manufacturers, BYD has established a name for itself internationally in a short span of time; however, millions of Indians remain unaware of this EV giant. This also results in a negligible number of showrooms across India. Despite operating in India since 2007, they have only handful of service centers and showrooms for display.

If you're in Gurugram or New Delhi, you might see a few of BYD (Atto 3s or e6s), but step outside the big metro cities and you will only see these cars online. Before these cars gain popularity, BYD needs to launch a substantial marketing campaign to promote itself and let everybody know that they exist. After that, it should invest in creating infrastructure to support its vision.

Verdict

On paper, the BYD eMAX 7 looks solid, and the new attractive pricing is just the cherry on top. The regular battery pack doesnt seem so ordinary when the range figures come to light; it's a perfect choice for EV buyers who want a vehicle primarily for short distances. However, there are several issues, such as the lack of features and a dull interior design, which are unexpected in a car that costs Rs 28 to 32 lakh after all taxes. Will this help BYD establish itself in India? Lets wait and see.
