As of now, the Jeep Compass lineup in India exclusively features diesel engines, and the automatic transmission is only available in the 4x4 variants. The 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine had to be discontinued due to compliance with BS6 Stage II emission norms. Consequently, the starting price of the Compass increased, especially for the automatic variants, with prices now commencing at over Rs 29 lakh (ex-showroom).
Since this makes it sit at a higher end of the spectrum, it also doesn't meet the diverse needs with a sole engine and transmission option. Introducing an affordable 2WD variant to the diesel-automatic lineup is certainly a step that will enhance accessibility to the SUV. This move will cater to customers seeking the convenience of an automatic gearbox without the need for 4x4 hardware, making the Jeep Compass a much more appealing choice for a wider range of buyers.
To Be Offered In 5 Trims: Details
The updated Compass will be offered in five trim levels: Sport, Longitude, Longitude+, Limited, and Model S. The Sport trim will remain the entry-level model and will exclusively feature the diesel-manual powertrain.
Next, a new Compass Longitude trim will be introduced, offering both the 2WD manual and 9-speed automatic gearbox options, serving as the new entry point for the Compass automatic range. Sources suggest that this variant will be priced at approximately Rs 27 lakh on-road, although the complete features list for this trim has not been disclosed yet.
Following that, the Longitude+ trim will come with additional features like a panoramic sunroof and a wireless charger, in addition to all the features available on the Longitude trim. Above that, the Limited trim will also include a new Black Shark edition, featuring an all-black interior and black alloy wheels.
Lastly, the Model S will continue to occupy the top tier of the lineup, available in both 2WD automatic and existing 4WD automatic variants. Additionally, all trims will receive redesigned alloy wheels, and a new chrome grille will be offered on the Limited and Model S trims.
Unofficial Bookings Open

For the pricing, expect it to loom around the starting range of Rs. 27 lakhs. However, you have to wait till the launch for the exact number.
Verdict
The upcoming 2WD variant of the Jeep Compass is expected to provide a broader range of choices and improved features, catering to diverse customer preferences. It aims to maintain its position as a versatile and well-equipped SUV in the Indian market. Interstingly, the SUV will be getting a petrol variant soon again, after it was discontinued a short while ago.
