Maruti Balneo. Brezza, Grand Vitara: A 5-Star Crash Test-Rated Vehicle Soon
Earlier this year, Maruti voluntarily sent 3 vehicles for crash testing by BNCAP and now according to online reports, Maruti is all set to get its first 5-star rated vehicle. As per a report published by Business Today, the Maruti Baleno, Brezza, and Grand Vitara are all set to receive a 5-star BNCAP rating. While this is what the leaks suggest, it also makes sense keeping in view the increased focus of carmakers as well as the new customers focus on a safer vehicle.
Bharat NCAP commenced testing in December 2023 and the Tata Safari and Harrier SUVs were the first to be medalled the 5-star rating from the indigenous testing agency. After that, more cars from Hyundai and Mahindra are in the race for their full-star rating. It is important to note that prior to this, the Global NCAP crash-tested vehicles for the Indian cars.
The induction of BNCAP now makes India the 5th country in the world with self-developed crash testing protocols. At par with global standards, this puts us just next to the US, Japan, South Korea, and China in terms of our own crash test rating systems.

BNCAP Testing Protocol
Bharat NCAP assigns 1-to-5 star safety ratings to cars based on how they perform in key tests: frontal and side impacts (including a pole test), electronic stability control effectiveness, and pedestrian protection. The test results then determine points for adult and child occupant protection. Cars are evaluated according to AIS-197 standards at designated centers and results are published on the Bharat NCAP website with certificates issued by the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT).
Verdict
If what the reports suggest is true, then Maruti will be getting its first full star rated safety car after the completion of the crash tests. While this will improve the safety of the passengers, it will also help in usher in of a new era in Maruti SUVs, with an increased focus on safety.
