Bookings for the highly awaited Tata Tiago CNG have been underway for a refundable amount o Rs 5,000 at all authorized dealerships
The ever-increasing fuel prices and the exponential rise in air pollution have been some of the biggest challenges that the auto industry has been facing in this day and age. While there's been a continued effort for faster adoption of EVs, an easier alternative is switching to CNG vehicles, at least, until there's a well-developed EV infrastructure in place. In line with this, many mainstream carmakers have been rolling out CNG variants of their existing models, especially in the lower segments of the market. The Tata Tiago CNG is one such highly awaited upcoming model.
In the latest development, it has come to light that the Tata Tiago CNG will officially go on sale on January 19. The new engine variant of the carmaker's most affordable offering will go on to lock horns with the likes of Maruti WagonR CNG and Hyundai Santry CNG. The introduction of the new version of Tiago will be accompanied by the launch of the CNG variant of the Tigor.

The new variant of the Tata Tiago will be marketed under the 'i-CNG' kit moniker and will be powered by a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol motor that, in its current, petrol-only guise, produces a maximum power of 86PS and a peak torque of 113Nm. Of course, the CNG variant will offer performance figures lower than the petrol-only sibling.
While the petrol-only Tata Tiago that's been on sale comes with two transmission choices - 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT - the CNG variant will be available only with the manual transmission unit. Moreover, it's not clear if it would be available in the top-spec, fully-loaded trim.
That said, visually, at least, the two models will look exactly the same if you can ignore the 'iCNG' badge on the bootlid. Also, even the interior will be untouched except for a button below the audio system to switch to CNG model.

Soon, the Tata Tiago will become the third budget hatchback to offer a factory-fitted CNG kit. Currently, the only cars that come with this option are the Maruti WagonR, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and the Hyundai Santro. Soon, even the second-gen Maruti Celerio is expected to join the fray. Meanwhile, the Tigor will become the second sub-compact sedan, after the Hyundai Aura, to be available with the factory-fitted CNG kit. In all likelihood, the CNG variants of the Tiago and the Tigor would command a price premium of roughly Rs 60,000 over the petrol-only counterparts.
