- Top 5 things Thar offers over Maruti Jimny
- Gets different mechanics and features
- 5-door Mahindra Thar coming soon as well
Mahindra Thar can be christened the ultimate off-road vehicle that Indians love. That is what the sales chart suggests, although you might have a different opinion based on your budget. However, challenging its throne is the latest offering from Maruti, which is the Jimny 5-door. While on the features front, it does outshines the Thar, there are a few tricks and things that it misses out on when compared to the Mahindras adventure vehicle.
Let's see the top 5 things that set the Mahindra Thar apart from the Jimny.
1. 2 Diesel Engines Along With A Petrol Mill
While Jimny comes with a single 1.5-litre petrol engine option, it misses out on a diesel powertrain. Thar, on the other hand, offers 2 diesel engine options and a petrol unit as well. You can opt for a 2.2-litre diesel engine producing 130 PS power or a 1.5-liter unit that churns out 118 PS of power. On top of this, if you want a petrol engine, you have a single 2.0-liter turbo unit that puts out 152 PS of peak power.
2. More Affordable 2WD As An Option
Most people, who buy these lifestyle vehicles, use them for quick spins and urban cruising. Very few enthusiasts tend to venture off-road, using the full capability of the vehicle. Keeping this in mind, Mahindra has given a more economical Rear Wheel Drive option as well for normal buyers. This flexibility widens the mass appeal by being a lot more accommodating for prospective buyers.
3. TPMS Missing On The Maruti Jimny
While the Jimny is a brimmed-up vehicle when it comes to the tech on-board, no car is ever perfect, no matter the price range. There is no contradiction here, the Thar gets a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System that is strangely missing on the Jimny. Considering that these vehicles are expected to venture into the wilderness, this is a really handy feature. What's interesting to note is that Maruti Grand Vitara gets it on the Strong Hybrid Alpha+ variant.
4. Mechanical Locking Differential (MLD)
Both vehicles have a brake lock differential. What it does is that when the situation arises, it locks the wheels that need less power and diverts them toward the wheel that is stuck to get the vehicle out. It uses the brakes to perform this task. However, the more advanced system is the Mechanical Lock Differential, which distributes equal power to the rear axle by locking the axles together. It provides all the torque to the tyre that has traction, resulting in more power delivery. This can be had as an option on the Mahindra Thar.
5. Soft And Hardtop Roof Options
Want to feel the air while you're out in the wild, you can opt for the soft top version of the Mahindra Thar. It gets both, a hardtop and a soft-top version right out of the factory. This is opposite to the only hardtop roof option with the Maruti Jimny.
