Non-camouflaged electric WagonR Spotted in Delhi? Set For Update Again?

Maruti Suzuki has been working on an electric variant of the WagonR for a long now. With the launch of the recently updated WagonR, will EV finally launch?

The WagonR has been a staple vehicle in India. Its sales, and long-term usage in both the commercial and private spaces, speak volumes about its legacy. Its odd van-shaped design might be polarizing, but theres no arguing the fact, that the WagonR is the most practical vehicle in its segment. To capitalize on its popularity, Maruti Suzuki announced in 2018, that they will launch an EV version of the WagonR.  We have caught glimpses of it, with its body shell completely non-camouflaged, and production-ready. However, is this the WagonR EV or a new model?

As you can see in the photo above, the overall body style is reminiscent of the WagonR, but the front fascia is quite different. Unlike large singular headlights in the current generation, the test module gets a dual-headlight design. The top section slots in the LED DRLs, and indicators, and the main headlight unit is housed in the front bumper, like a typical EV also gets a closed grille design.

Moving over to the side, the WagonRs silhouette is clearly is visible, with blacked-out B-pillars and C-pillars. The rear fascia almost looks the same, with tweaks to the rear taillights and a new rear bumper as well.

The interior of the vehicle again felt familiar-looking, with the Suzuki badged steering wheel and the dual-tone dashboard. These elements are easily visible in the WagonR Zxi variant. You can also see the infotainment touchscreen system, and the same unit is available with the top-spec WagonR again.

However, despite so many resemblances with the WagonR, Maruti Suzuki might take a quick last moment U-turn and launch an entirely new vehicle. The fuel filler cap is significantly bigger, so that might be a giveaway to an electric charging point. But we cant confirm anything as of now.

Maruti Suzuki had showcased the WagonR EV prototype,  way back in September 2018. They had built 50 prototypes at its Gurgaon plant, after its debut at the 2018 MOVE Mobility Summit. The prototype models had fast charging capabilities and a range of 130 km. However, the project was shelved due to waning interest in the Indian market, which was last reported. So, is this a new model from the manufacturer that they will launch?
