If you are inclined towards the 1.2-litre, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine then both the i20 as well as Baleno provide the same figures. Yes, there's a DualJet naturally aspirated with better fuel economy too but then it comes at a premium cost Rs 90,000.

The 1.2L of both the engines generate 82 bhp but the torque of new i20 is 2 Nm more than that of Baleno. Similarly, in terms of fuel economy both the engine delivers 21 km/l. If you buy the i20 with CVT gearbox then you get a better fuel economy of 19.65 km/l and even more power of 87 bhp. The Baleno delivers 19.56 km/l in its automatic form.
Similarly, the new i20 also has an advantage with the introduction of the new 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. This one was first introduced in Venue and delivers 118 bhp with a peak torque of 172 Nm. There is no manual gearbox for this engine in i20 but there's a semi-auto 6-speed iMT and a slick 7-speed DCT which is a proper automatic. The semi-auto delivers 20.28 km/l while the dual-clutch transmission delivers 20 km/l.

The new i20 has grown in dimensions from its previous model and it shows. Not only on the paper but in reality also when you see it. The 2020 model now has more sharp lines opposed to the curves which the earlier had. It has a raw and aesthetic appeal to it now.
Comparing the dimension with the Maruti Baleno then the new i20 is now wider by 30 mm which means extra shoulder space. The wheelbase sticks to 2580 mm as opposed to the 2520 mm present in the Baleno. The extra 60 mm reflects more legroom inside the cabin.
Where the Baleno excels is the boot space which is larger by 28 litres this meaning space for an extra bag and in height. Baleno is taller by 5 mm than the new i20. Rest, both the premium hatchbacks receive 16-inch alloy wheels and 170 mm of ground clearance.

With the launch of new i20, one thing is for sure that the Maruti Baleno seems the perfect hatchback to buy. However, you do lose out on the exclusive features, better interiors, diesel engine and most importantly the turbocharged unit.
If you are someone who can compromise on the features and safety then the Baleno comes to your rescue. However, if you are someone who wants to stand out from the crowd and buy a premium hatchback with uber loads of features and better safety, i20 is the answer. Yes, it seems quite overpriced but we are sure it is worth every penny.
