2023 Tata Punch CNG Spotted Testing; Launch Soon - Hyundai Exter Rival

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Tata Punch CNG showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo
  • Recently Tata Altroz CNG launched as well
  • Launch expected soon in the coming months

After Tata finally launched the Tata Altroz iCNG just recently, it is gearing up for one more addition to its portfolio. Tata Punch CNG has been spotted testing, and that too, without any camo whatsoever. Punch CNG first made its public appearance at the Auto Expo 2023 along with a few more offerings from Tata. But how do we know that this is the CNG variant?

Check out the pictures and details in this article.

Tata Punch CNG Testing On Roads

After getting the Altroz CNG to market, the company now has ample time to focus on Punch CNG. The test mule spy shots in a road test without any camo indicate a near-future launch date. While everything suggests that this might be a normal Punch since it does not have any badging of CNG at the rear, there is a small hint. The spare tire is mounted below the car, which we saw earlier with the Altroz CNG variant as well. The same treatment will be given to Punch CNG too.

Powertrain

Already revealed at the Auto Expo 2023, Punch CNG will be powered by a 1.2-liter, Revotron petrol engine that puts out 84bhp and 113Nm of torque. However, in CNG mode, this output would drop down to 76bhp and 97Nm of torque. The gearbox choice is a sole 5-speed manual transmission.

Tata Punch - The Ingenious 'Twin Cylinder' Technology

Healing the Achilles Heel of CNG car owners is the really clever, yet simple twin-cylinder technology of the Punch CNG. The same was incorporated with the Altroz CNG as well. By replacing a bigger CNG cylinder of 60 liters with 2 small cylinders of 30 liters each, stacked side by side, it makes room for a flat-floored practical boot space. We expect other carmakers to copy this onto their CNG vehicles as well.

VERDICT- Since Hyundai Exter's powertrain details mention a CNG variant already, Tata is acting swiftly. Also, since both the cars are in direct competition, expect the Punch CNG a little earlier than before to crash the Exter's party.
