The Mahindra Thar is one of the most reasonably priced 4WD vehicles on the Indian market, and the recently released RWD variant has made it even more affordable. For the 4WD model, the Mahindra Thar is currently offered in two major trim levels, the AX(O) and LX, with the lower-spec AX trims being discontinued a few months ago. It appears that the company is currently planning to relaunch the lower-spec models. An online release of a new RTO document outlining the new AX variants has surfaced online. Mahindra could be making this move to more effectively compete against the upcoming Maruti Jimny.

Mahindra Thar Upcoming Variant Details
The recently released document states that the new AX versions will be offered with both diesel and petrol engines, but only manual transmissions. The AX AC 4-seater soft top MT will be the base model for the new petrol AX variants. The new petrol variant lineup will therefore include the following models.

Mahindra Thar 4WD Engine Specifications
A 2.0-liter petrol engine and a 2.2-liter diesel engine are both available on the Mahindra Thar 4WD. The diesel engine provides 130 bhp of power and 300 Nm of peak torque, compared to the petrol engine's 148 bhp of power and 320 Nm of peak torque. Both engines can be paired with either an automatic or 6-speed manual transmission.
The Thar 4WD is currently priced between Rs 13.59 lakh (ex-showroom) and Rs 16.49 lakh (ex-showroom).
Verdict: The Thar 4WD will become more affordable and a more potent competitor to the upcoming 5-door Jimny with the inclusion of the additional models.
