Maruti Suzuki Evaluates Plans To Launch Suzuki Jimny In India

Maruti Suzuki is one of the most popular automotive manufacturers in India which has topped multiple sales figures charts over the years with many fabulous products on offer. Maruti Suzuki Gypsy was a popular 4x4 vehicle designed on a ladder frame chassis and was on sale for more than two decades. After the discontinuation of the Gypsy King, Maruti Suzuki India did not have a product in its portfolio to offer this level of off-road feel and ruggedness. The wait would be over soon as Maruti Suzuki evaluates plans to launch Suzuki Jimny in India too!

The only two SUVs on offer by Maruti Suzuki India are the Vitara Brezza and the S-Cross but both of them lack an all-wheel drive powertrain. The Suzuki Jimny Sierra was earlier unveiled by Maruti Suzuki at the 2020 Auto Expo in a three-door avatar which raised the hopes higher as the Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha were going to receive tough competition from this product.

The Maruti Suzuki Jimny is currently being manufactured in Maruti Suzuki India's Manesar manufacturing facility and is exported to some international markets. It is also suspected that Maruti Suzuki would be introducing a five-door variant for the Jimny in India. As the requirements and priorities of the Indian consumer market are different from global demands, the Gypsy King was an extended wheelbase version of the Suzuki Samurai retailed in the western markets and Maruti Suzuki seems to follow a different approach for this product too!

As per the sources, the product would debut in the first half of 2023 and as per the leaked documents, the five-door Jimny measures 3850 mm in length, 1645 mm in width and 1730 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2550 mm which makes it more than 300 mm longer than the international spec three-door Jimny. The weight would be on the higher side by a quintal with increased ground clearance to cope with the Indian roads. As it is the Jimny would be offered as a rugged off-roading ladder on frame SUV, so would feature decent approach and departure angles.

It is expected to carry the legacy of the old school Gypsy King and it might be possible that Maruti Suzuki India Limited retails the Jimny by reviving the 'Gypsy' tag! Reportedly, the brand is also working to develop a new SUV which would be released by 2023 and has many launches in the pipeline.

The current Maruti Suzuki SUVs on offer are the mini-SUV S-presso, the Vitara Brezza and the S-cross. None of these vehicles features an All-Wheel Drive powertrain. In the international markets, even the Suzuki Ignis is offered with four-wheel drive options and has proven to be a worthy off-roader.

The India bound Jimny is expected to be powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine which would produce around 102 bhp of power and 138 N-m of torque, but can also be used in a different state of tune. It would be offered with both a manual and an automatic transmission.
