We extend our immense gratitude to our customers for their unwavering trust and to our employees for their dedication, which have been instrumental in achieving this landmark. Yamaha remains dedicated to shaping the future of performance motorcycling, ensuring the R15 continues to inspire riders for generations to come."
What Makes The Yamaha R15 So Popular?
The R15 came in at a time when we had very little access to performance motorcycles. It was unlike anything we had ever seen before; a fully-faired sportsbike that was beginner-friendly. You could finally learn your way around a race track and get your knee down in style. The riding position was very committed for daily usage, and the less said about the pillion seat, the better. However, it was and still is the perfect the bike to learn how to attack the corners on.
More than that, the R15 came at a point of time when Yamaha had a serious strategy change and decided to get back to its performance biking roots; something it began with the RD350 and the RX100 in the 80s and 90s, but then it completely switched to commuters for a long time.

What is the R15, then? An accessible, affordable and reliable sportsbike, powered by a 155cc, liquid-cooled engine, paired to a 6-speed gearbox, housed in a Deltabox chassis. The first-gen R15 was quite literally a mini-R1 in terms of design, especially if you opted for the red-and-white livery.
Over the years, the R15 has been tweaked and made better, but it also continues to retain the core package that makes it beginner-friendly for newer riders even today. Currently in its fourth-generation, the R15 today comes equipped with golden USD forks, a quickshifter, bluetooth connectivity, ride modes, traction control, app-based features, VVA, and ABS among other things.
With a price tag starting from Rs 1.83 lakh (ex-showroom), the R15 remains one of the most affordable sportsbikes in the market today, making it easily accessible for customers, and yet it isn't intimidating enough to scare off newer riders.
Verdict
The R15 continues to be immensely popular for Yamaha, but it is time for the Japanese bikemaker to give us more higher-capacity bikes that are not only affordable, but they also pack in the appropriate amount of rider aids as well, so that riders can graduate naturally to something bigger from an R15.
