Pro 1: Safety

Tata Punch

The Punch is one of few cars in its category that has scored a five-star rating in the Global NCAP crash tests. The Tata Punch offers the best safety in its segment by scoring 16.453 points for adult occupant protection and 40.891 points for child occupant protection.

Pro 2: Design Language

Tata Punch Micro SUV Front Three Quarters

Back in 2019, when Tata Motors revealed the Punch in the H2X concept, the manufacturer mentioned that the prod-spec version would also get a similar design. However, it was quite difficult to make it in a similar form, Tata Motors launched the Punch, deriving all the design aesthetics and characteristics from the H2X concept. Tata Punch has a considerable road presence and an SUV stance that makes it stand out in the segment.

Pro 3: CNG Tech

Twin cylinder CNG tech

Tata Motors offers Punch with its twin-cylinder technology that saves boot space at the back. The twin-cylinder CNG tech uses two cylinders instead of a single bulky cylinder that occupies all the boot space. This CNG tech could be one of the reasons to buy Punch compact SUV.

Con 1: Just AMT in the Name of Automatic

AMT

Tata Motors does not offer any CVT or DCT unit with the Punch. The automatic variants of the Tata Punch get only AMT transmission. The AMT gearbox is not considered a proper automatic transmission as everything is controlled by a computer in this gearbox. An AMT unit behaves jerky in terms of gear shifts. So, if you are the one who prefers proper automatic units like DCT and CVT, this car is not for you.

Con 2: Lacks Power

engine

The Punch compact SUV has always been criticized for featuring an underpowered 1.2-litre three-cylinder NA engine. This powertrain makes 86 bhp and 113 Nm of torque and comes linked to a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT unit. Though it performs well in most situations, we can't ignore the fact that the Punch's engine feels underpowered sometimes.

Verdict

The Tata Punch shines as India's top-selling compact SUV with a robust safety rating, appealing design, and innovative CNG technology. However, its AMT-only automatic variant and underpowered engine may deter enthusiasts seeking smoother transmissions and more spirited performance. Overall, it offers commendable value and safety in its segment.
