Maruti Jimny 4X4 To Replace Gypsy In Indian Army
As per the reports published online, the replacement of the Indian Army's workhorse is the Jimny. Currently, Maruti Gypsy is used as the primary vehicle in the Indian Army. However, the officials of Maruti have claimed to have made a special Jimny just for Army use. This Jimny variant is draped with a special Army Green colour livery. However, no further details about it joining the forces are revealed. Additionally, there are no details about its specifications and changes.
Mind you, the Jimny debuted in January'23 in India. While civilians have already started booking this upcoming SUV, the Indian Army is still hinged on the Gypsy. While there is no doubt that Gypsy is a potential SUV but it has now started to get old. Jimny, on the other hand, offers better tech and similar off-road capabilities as Gypsy. Hence, the Indian Army might soon switch to the new Jimny brand. Meanwhile, civilians can opt between the blue, red, black, grey, and white monotone colours. Additionally, two dual-tone colour options i.e. Neon Green & Red-Black are also on offer.
Speaking of the technical details, the civilian model will get the 1.5-lt K15B petrol engine. This sturdy and reliable unit makes a peak power of 103 bhp & 134 Nm of peak torque. Maruti is offering it with a manual and automatic gearbox option. Additionally, the 4X4 drivetrain and MLD are standard on the Indian model. But, if we speak of the Army version, it will likely get changes to it. We anticipate that Maruti will add more power and utility-based design changes for the Indian Army on it.
Verdict
Maruti Gypsy has been a trusted workhorse for the Indian Defence Forces. However, with the aging technology and components, Jimny seems to be a better choice. If the Army replaces the Gypsy with the Jimny, it will be a win-win situation for Maruti Suzuki. However, the official replacement of Gypsy is still far. Other contenders in this race are the upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-Door & Force Gurkha 5-Door.
