MG Motor India has been proactively working to introduce new EVs in the Indian market. The streak started with the launch of ZS EV, and the Chinese-owned brand is ready to showcase a slew of electric cars at the 2023 Auto Expo. Some of these EVs are slated for launch in the Indian market, while others are still under consideration. Ahead of the motor show, the company has registered a new trademark for the name Comet EV.

MG Registers Trademark for Comet EV: Is it the MG Air EV?
The trademark registered in Trade Mark Journal by MG Motor India dates back to 8th March 2022. This essentially means that the electric vehicle was in the works for a long time and now it will be showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo. We believe that the upcoming Comet EV will be the localised version of MG Air EV, which was confirmed for a launch in the domestic market. Moreover, the test mule of the small electric hatch was also spotted testing in the country. Apart from this, there are very slim chances of MG introducing an altogether new EV for the Indian market, out of nowhere.
MG Registers Trademark for Comet EV: MG Air EV- Details
If the Comet EV will be the name for India-specific MG Air EV, then it will be the second all-electric model to join the brand's line-up. the 2.9 meters long, the 3-door small hatch will be priced around Rs. 10 lakh ballpark. The claimed electric driving range of the electric hatch will be in the range of 200-300 kilometres, thus making it a good option for city use.
Along with this, the company will also showcase the MG4 and MG5 EV at the Auto Expo, besides the facelifted Hector and Hector Plus SUVs.

Verdict: MG Motor is working to expand its EV portfolio in the Indian market. In line with this, the registration of the Comet EV trademark hints at the possible launch of an India-specific version of the Air EV soon after its unveiling at the 2023 Auto Expo. Is the Comet EV the final name for the small electric hatch? We believe so, but we have to wait till the company itself confirms it at the motor show.
